The real science
Simple Language, Complex Science
Your brain cells talk to each other with chemical messengers. Dopamine is roughly the “this matters, pay attention” message. Serotonin is closer to “we're okay.” GABA is the brake pedal — it quiets cells that are firing too much. Too little brake and everything feels loud and urgent. Too much and you feel switched off.
Semax is a small fragment of a natural hormone your body already makes. Research associates it with more BDNF — brain-derived neurotrophic factor. Easiest way to picture BDNF: fertilizer for brain cells. More of it and connections grow and hold better, which is the physical side of learning and memory. Semax is also studied for its effect on dopamine signalling, which is the attention part.
Selank is built from a piece of an immune-system molecule called tuftsin. It's studied for anxiety, working through GABA and serotonin pathways — pressing the brake gently instead of slamming it. That distinction matters: classic anti-anxiety drugs work by flooding the brake system, which is why they make people drowsy and foggy. Selank's research interest is that it appears to reduce anxious signalling without the sedation.
Think of driving up a hill. Semax is the gas — more power, more speed. Selank is the steering and the brakes — control. Gas alone and you're fast and out of control. Brakes alone and you never make it up the hill. You want both, working at the same time.
Mechanically, they don't fight for the same receptor. Semax leans on growth-factor and dopamine signalling; Selank leans on the calming GABA/serotonin side. That separation is exactly why they're studied as a stack instead of as substitutes — one raises capacity, the other keeps arousal from running away with it.
Research designs typically introduce one compound at a time so each one's effect can be told apart before they overlap.
