SS-31

Mitochondria-targeting tetrapeptide (elamipretide) studied for cardiolipin protection and oxidative-stress research.

Mitochondrial peptideCellular energyBatch-tested

Overview

SS-31 (also known as elamipretide) is a synthetic tetrapeptide designed to concentrate in the inner mitochondrial membrane, where it binds the phospholipid cardiolipin.

It is one of the most-studied mitochondria-targeting research peptides, of interest in oxidative-stress, mitochondrial-function, and cellular-energy research models.

Mechanism of interest

  • Cardiolipin binding — studied for stabilizing the mitochondrial-membrane scaffolding that the energy machinery sits on.
  • Oxidative-stress reduction — investigated for limiting reactive-oxygen-species leakage in research models.
  • Mitochondrial function — examined for effects on ATP production and bioenergetics.
